MasterChef Australia is a long-running cooking game show in Australia, produced by Shine Australia and aired on Network Ten from 7:30pm five nights per week. Up until the end of the 2019 season, the program’s core judging panel comprised of chef and restaurant owner Gary Mehigan, chef George Calombaris and food critic Matt Preston.
Where is Masterchef Australia Filmed?
The cooking contestants compete in the MasterChef Australia Kitchen located in Flemington, Melbourne, as well as other domestic and international locations throughout the season.
The competitive cooking show first aired in 2009 and is open to people aged 18 years and older who do not work in a professional environment preparing and cooking fresh food as their main source of income.
The program’s format is based on the British versions of MasterChef and MasterChef Goes Large. The first few episodes in each series involve a large number of potential contestants individually preparing and presenting their food creation to the judges during auditions to gain a place as a semi-finalist.
This group subsequently competes in numerous challenges based around food preparation skills and knowledge. The successful contenders from this round, generally ranging from 20 to 24, then compete in various individual and team-based cooking activities, with eliminations taking place each week.
The ultimate winner of each series receives a $250,000 cash prize, along with the opportunity to publish their own cookbook and receive training and mentoring from well-known professional chefs.
Masterchef Australia Format
The weekly format of episodes throughout the main part of each series is as follows: Sundays are generally ‘Challenges’ (including the ‘Mystery Box’ and ‘Invention Test’); Mondays are the ‘Pressure Test’ involving the bottom three contestants from the previous night’s episode; Tuesdays involve an ‘Immunity Challenge’; Wednesdays are some form ‘Team Challenge’; and Thursdays feature the weekly ‘Elimination’ involving the two poorest performing contestants from the Team Challenge competing against each other to remain in the competition.
The winner of the inaugural MasterChef Australia in 2009 was Julie Goodwin. Other notable winners and runners-up who have gone on to forge television and other cooking-related careers in the media include Poh Ling Yeow (2009 Runner-up) and Adam Liaw (2010 Winner).
Masterchef Australia History
The finale of the first series had 4.11 million television viewers, making it the highest rating non-sporting television program since OZTAM ratings began in 2001. It remains the fourth most watched televised program in Australia behind three major sporting events. However, ratings have fallen over the years.
During the first five years, there were a number of additional versions of the show involving younger contestants (Junior MasterChef), returning contests from the first three series (All-Stars) and professional chefs as contestants (The Professionals). However, the producers decided to focus solely on the original version from 2014 onwards.
Regular guest judges appearing in multiple seasons include Curtis Stone, Heston Blumenthal, Marco Pierre-White and Kylie Kwong.
