The Carabao Cup, also known as the EFL Cup and colloquially as the League Cup, is an annual knockout tournament for professional men’s football in England.
Today we’ll show you how to watch Carabao Cup in New Zealand.
What is the Carabao Cup?
The competition is organized by the English Football League, who operate the EFL Championship, EFL League One and EFL League 2, the second, third and fourth highest divisions in English football, respectively.
The Carabao Cup is open to any participating team in these leagues, in addition to the Premier League, which is the top flight of football in England.
The EFL was founded in 1960, and alongside the Premier League, FA Cup and Community Shield, comprises one of four domestic English titles available.
The Carabao Cup Process
Due to its relatively low prize pool (100,000 GBP to the winner, compared to 2,000,000 GBP for the FA Cup), the Carabao Cup is not considered particularly prestigious.
As such, it is often the case that the strongest teams will intentionally field weaker squads, giving younger players in the team valuable on-pitch experience, with little risk to the club.
This makes the likelihood of ‘giant killers’ higher, where lower level teams beat higher level teams as the comparative difference between the former’s strongest squad and latter’s comparatively weaker are similar.
For example, Manchester United’s 4-0 loss to third division side MK-Dons in the second round of the tournament.
Who Can Partake?
92 teams participate in the league, 24 from each of the four leagues, who compete across 7 rounds.
The format of the league is such that by the third round, only 32 teams are left.
Teams competing in Europe are given a bye to the third round, whereas remaining Premier League teams enter into the second round and the rest of the English Football teams begin the competition immediately in the first round.
How It Works?
Each match up until the semi-finals is single legged and matches across the semi-finals and finals are double legged.
The finals are played in Wembley Stadium, and ties between teams after extra time are determined by a penalty shootout. Ties between teams in non-final games do not go into extra time, and instead go straight into penalties.
Winners of the Carabao Cup are granted a place in the UEFA Europa League, assuming they do not qualify via other means by the season’s end, in which case the place is instead given to the highest finishing Premier League team that hasn’t already qualified.
Who Won The Carabao Cup?
The current championship winners are Manchester United, who won the 2018/2019 competition after beating Chelsea in the Final. The 2018/2019 competition ran from 14 August 2018 to 24 February 2019, with Chelsea, United, Tottenham and Burton Albion making it to the semifinals.
The final between United and Chelsea was uneventful, as no goals were scored during both normal and extra time, the title going United’s way after winning 4-3 in penalties.
However, the match was notable for an event involving Chelsea’s goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who refused to be substituted by manager Maurizio Sarri, leading to the Chelsea manager storming off down the tunnel in frustration.
