So you want to watch the apprentice UK edition live and on demand in New Zealand? Well today we’ll show you how you can do just that within minutes.
What is the Apprentice UK?
The Apprentice UK is a British reality television game show, based on the US version of the same name. The premise of the show is that a group of aspiring business people participate in a series of challenges, competing against one another, in order to impress and score a prize offered by the show’s host, British billionaire Alan Sugar.
The show first aired in 2005 in an attempt to replicate the success seen by the US version and has since gone on to broadcast 196 episodes (including 26 specials) across 14 seasons, by BBC.
The popularity of the show has led to the spawning of many similar shows, such as Tycoon, Beat the Boss and Election. It is an extremely popular television show in Britain, most noticeably episode 12 of season 7 exceeding 10 million viewers, and averaging 8.8 million throughout the entire series.
How Apprentice UK Works?
The structure of the show begins with a non-televised audition/qualification stage, where aspiring business people apply to be on the show, often in the many thousands.
After reducing the applicant pool to a small percentage, the remaining short-listed candidates are divided into groups and tasked with completing various exercises to determine their business skills and whether or not they’d be a good participant for the show.
The number of competitors on the show has varied throughout its seasons, ranging from 14-20, but as of the time of writing, the most recent season (14) had 16, split evenly between men and women.
What Tasks Do Contestants Perform?
Throughout the show, aspiring apprentices are given a range of tasks to test their abilities in various areas; salesmanship, negotiation, requisitioning, leadership, teamwork, and organisation.
Apprentices are split into two teams for the tasks, and each episode centres on one of these specific skills.
The two teams are given briefings by Sugar, such as what the task involves and the win conditions, which are typically maximising profit or concocting a concept that Sugar values more than the other.
To complete the tasks, teams generally appoint someone to be the project manager, who is in charge of coordinating the rest of the team and making critical decisions.
At the conclusion of a task, the apprentices are grouped together into the ‘boardroom’, presided over by Sugar and his advisers, who evaluate their involvement in the task and determine which candidates remain on the show.
Apprentice UK Finale
When only five candidates remain, Sugar and his team conduct a series of interviews, where apprentices must make cases for why they deserve to win the prize and remain on the show.
Following this, it is generally the case that three apprentices are fired, leaving only two to compete in the final.
The final itself involves another task between the remaining finalists, with the culmination of the show leading to Sugar ultimately choosing the winner based on their performance in the final task.
When making his decision, Sugar points at the winning candidate, uttering the phrase “you’re hired’, the winner then leaving in Sugar’s limousine and marking the end of the season.
