If you’ve been trying to watch Match of the Day in New Zealand then you’ll probably have hit a brick wall and are missing out on tons and tons of content that is actually only available to UK residents. I’ll show you how to bypass the geo restriction and watch Match of the Day in New Zealand within minutes.
Match of the Day is great but like football licensing they can’t show the same content to countries such as New Zealand. Bein Sports, the rights holders in New Zealand don’t offer much in the way of a similar service. This is a real pain especially for consumers in New Zealand as we miss out!
Thankfully there is a simple way to unlock this content without making any changes to your home internet subscription. Believe it or not, Match of the Day uses the BBC iPlayer which simply looks at the IP address or the DNS address of your connection to determine which content you can or can’t see.
Fortunately for us this allows us to bypass the filter and unlock all the Match of the Day NZ content within New Zealand. However iPlayer are catching on and blocking most VPN providers (Pure VPN still works fine) and companies that offer geo unblocking services.
It’s a game of cat and mouse with VPN providers ultimately winning as Match of the Day can only block so many providers before they simply change their IP or relocate to a different datacenter.
How To Watch Match of the Day In New Zealand
The next step is to decide how you plan on watching Match of the Day. If you’re using a smart TV or android box, Mibox or something similar then you need to purchase a VPN service. If you’re using a Roku you need to use Smart DNS or Router level VPN.
I’ve used many different VPN providers over the last few years and the best VPN for watching Match of the Day is Pure VPN. Currently you can get a 2 year subscription from $2.88 per month and they offer both router level and standard VPN services.
Once you signup with Pure VPN you simply download their VPN app to your device. If you’re using a smart TV or android box like me, go to the app store and download their free app. Alternatively if you’re using something like the Fire TV you can sideload their app into your device. If you’re using the router level service you’ll need to follow the instructions on their knowledgebase to setup your router. If you’re on a laptop, mac, desktop or tablet download the app they provide.
Next login to your account, connect to a UK server.
Now reload your iPlayer and you will now have full access.
Sometimes iPlayer will see you are using the VPN or block the content. Unfortunately this is an ongoing issue and the VPN provider will resolve the problem within a few hours. Like I said earlier, cat and mouse game but if you really want Match of the Day it’s pretty much your only option, or move to the EU.
