Super League is the Northern Hemisphere’s highest professional rugby league club championship and is contested by twelve teams. Eleven of the teams are based in England and the remaining team is French. The tournament is currently called the Betfred Super League due to sponsorship naming rights.
Super League replaced the Rugby Football League Champions in 1996 after media mogul Rupert Murdoch negotiated with the British clubs to develop a ‘super league’ as a way of expanding his broadcasting ventures.

The arrangement involved significant financial incentives for the clubs and included an agreement to shift the season from winter to summer months.
As part of the new tournament, proposals were also made to merge a number of existing clubs. However, this idea was very unpopular and instead only the top ten existing teams initially joined the Super League.
In 2009, the promotion and relegation system, where poor performing teams are moved into a second-tier competition, was replaced with three-year licences to determine which teams participated in the tournament, based on several criteria.
Between 2009 and 2018, a number of changes were made to the licensing system and the format of the contest.
This included changes to the number of teams and the introduction of a ‘Super8’ championship across three professional divisions based on each team’s finishing place on the league table.
Under the current structure which was introduced in 2018, 12 clubs play a total of 29 games from February to September, including 22 home and away matches, a ‘Magic Weekend’ during which all games for a single round are played at one stadium, and a further six ‘loop fixtures’ based on positions in the league.
The team at the bottom of the league after the 29 rounds receives the Wooden Spoon. The top five teams then participate in a play-off series which determines the two teams that will participate in that year’s Grand Final.
This final match is held each year at Old Trafford, a football stadium located in Greater Manchester, England.
The winning team receives the Super League Trophy and are named Super League Champions.
The winner of the Grand Final is given the Super League Trophy as Super League Champions.
This is deemed more prestigious than the minor premiership. Each year, the name of the winning team, along with the name of the team’s captain are engraved on the trophy.
Wigan Warriors are the 2018 premiership winners, bringing their number of titles to five. Leeds Rhinos have won the most Super League championships, with a total of eight titles.
One of
criticisms of the Super League is that only four teams have won the championship since its inception in 1996.
Super League will introduce a ‘Golden point’ as part of the 2019 season, involving the use of a sudden death overtime system to break a match were scores are tied. This will align it with Australia’s system that has been in place since 2003 for its National Rugby League (NRL).
