Portugal has one of the best football leagues in the world but coverage is very limited in New Zealand.
We’ll show you how to watch all Primeira Liga games live and on demand.
What is Primeira Liga?
The Primeira Liga is the top flight of professional men’s football in Portugal, sitting at the top-tier of the Portuguese Football League System and organized by the governing body for the sport in the country, the Liga Portugal.
The league was founded in 1935 and consists of 18 teams playing each season, although over 70 different clubs have competed in the league since its inception. Despite this, the league has only ever been won by 5 different clubs, the “Big Three” composed of Porto, Benfica and Sporting CP.
The other two winners have been Belenenses in the 1945–46 season and Boavista in the 2000–01 season. The Primeria Liga is one of the most reputable leagues in the world, as of February 2017 it was ranked 7th in UEFA’s rankings, behind the Russian Premier League and ahead of the Ukrainian Premier League.
It was also notable for breaking into the top 5 during the 2011/2012 season, surpassing France’s Ligue 1.
Primeira Liga Teams
18 teams play against each other across 34 games, one home and one away. The bottom two teams by the end of the season are relegated to the second division, the Segunda Liga, replaced by the top two finishers of that league.
The top two teams in the Primeria Liga qualify for the UEFA Champion’s League, the first place team granted direct access to the competition’s group stage and the second place placed in the qualifiers for the group stage. The third and fourth place finishers qualify for the UEFA Europa League, in addition to the winners of the Taça de Portugal.
The league is noted for the way it is routinely, and historically, dominated by such a small subset of teams, the “Big Three”. Benfica have won the league 37 times, with 28 and Sporting at 18.
This has consequences for the smaller teams, who lack domestic attendance from the locals and limited broadcasting of their matches, making it difficult to break out from below the ranks of the top three in any meaningful way.
For example, during the 2018/2019 season, only 298 people attended a match between Belenenses and Moreirense, whereas the record attendance for the season was between Benfica and Santa Clara at 64,064, over 200 times more.
Primeira Liga Previous Seasons
The 2018/2019 season was won by Benfica after a neck and neck season with defending champions Porto, Benfica ending the season with 87 points to Porto’s 85.
Benfica equaled their own season record of 103 goals, 10 of which were scored in a single game against Nacional in February 2019, and 23 scored by the season’s top goal scorer Haris Seferović.
Three teams were relegated during this season, unlike the previous two, as a result of a court decision placing club Gil Vicente in the Premeira Liga for the 2019/2020 season.
The three teams relegated were Chavez, Nacional and Feirense, replaced by the top two of the LigaPro, Paços de Ferreira and Famalicão, who will play in the Premeira Liga for the 2019/2020 season.
