The Argentine Polo Open Championship, known in the Spanish speaking world as the Campeonato Argentino Abierto de Polo is the world’s most significant international inter-club polo competition.
The annual event is held in Palermo, the largest neighbourhood in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires, and is organised by the Argentine Polo Association (Asociación de Polo). Held in November and December, it is the last of three main polo events held each year in Argentina, with the other two being the Hurlingham Open and the Tortugas Open.
They are collectively known as the Argentine Triple Crown (La Triple Corona), and form the most significant worldwide polo series.
The tradition of polo in Argentina began during the era of British immigration in the 19th century. The first Argentine Polo Open Championship was held in 1893 and was called the River Plate Polo Championship up until 1923.
The championship is held at the Campo Argentino del Polo (Argentine Polo Ground). The stadium holds up to 30,000 people and is commonly referred to as the Cathedral of Polo. In addition to polo matches, the stadium is also used for field hockey and pato (a game played on horseback that is a combination of polo and basketball).
Each participating team has a handicap of between 28 and 40 goals, based on the quality of their play. The local team is La Dolfina and has the highest possible handicap of 40 goals. Between September and October, teams with handicaps of up to 32 take part in a qualifying tournament to gain two remaining places in the championship.
The polo matches involve two teams of four players who are mounted on horses. The players frequently require multiple replacements of horses throughout the game and often change horses without first dismounting. During each match there are eight periods, known as chukkas.
Each player is entitled to have at least one horse for each chukka, with a maximum of up to 14 horses per match.
The players require skills in horsemanship, use of the mallet (which is always held in the right hand) and ability to maintain concentration on the location of the ball and fellow teammates in order to score goals. The team who scores the most points in the game is declared the winner.
Teams do not compete for money, but rather for the tradition and love of polo.
The city of Coronel Suárez has won the most championships, with a total of 25 titles. At present, seven out of the eight international players with the best handicaps are Argentine, including Adolfo Cambiaso. He is currently the most successful professional polo player and has a 10 goal handicap.
The championship is well known as a social networking event. It regularly draws a wide range of celebrities including sportspeople, royal families, business leaders and actors who attend Palermo during the polo season. Glamourous parties and other events at nearby bars and clubs are also a feature of the celebrations which take place during the championship.
