The PGA Tour, (stylised in capital letters by its officials as the PGA TOUR), is the organising body of the top tier of professional golf tours played by men in the United States and North America.
The PGA Tour hosts 6 tours, such as the PGA Tour and the PGA Tour Championships, the latter of which is for men aged 50 and over.
The PGA Tour is a nonprofit organisation, originally founded in December 1929 by the PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association of America), but was broken off from the PGA in 1968 following disputes about how to distribute the increased revenue the PGA had seen during the 1960’s, and is now entirely independent.
Distinguishing the PGA Tour from the PGA is self-evidently confusing, given the shared namesake. However, a key consideration is that the Tour does not host the professional, primary major championships of men’s golf in North America, such as the Masters Tournament or the U.S. Open. These events, amongst others, are all run by the PGA.
Given that it is a non-profit organisation, the PGA Tour emphasises raising money for charity, particularly the local charities operating within the proximity of which a particular event is taking place.
The PGA Tour’s events are almost exclusively non-profit, with some exceptions made for certain older events. In 2017, the PGA Tour, across the totality of its events, raised over $180 million for charity.
Broadcasting rights for the tour are currently held by CBS and NBC Sports, who were contracted from 2011 until 2021. Furthermore, the PGA Tour hosts streaming services for viewers, referred to as PGA Tour Live, which is available to viewers at a subscription fee. However, certain snippets can be found on their twitter.
Despite its independence from the PGA, the PGA Tour uses results from the events run by the PGA, such as the aforementioned Masters Tournament or U.S. Open, to select the fields participants for the Tour.
It uses a priority system, based on individuals’ success in a series of different events. For example, the winner of the PGA Championship in the last 5 seasons or the current season has the highest priority for consideration in involvement in a given tour.
The PGA Tour has a multitude of events. The 2019 tour hosted 46 official events, and the 2018 tour hosted 48.
The events move throughout the US, starting in Hawaii in January, then moving to California and Arizona; a period referred to as the ‘West Coast Swing’, then proceeding to move to the American south-east for the ‘Southern Swing’.
For most of the events, the number of participants is either 132, 144 or 156, and most typically play between 20-30 events over the course of the tour.
The most recent ‘victor’, or the participant that received the most money, is Jack Thomas, a former world number one. Thomas received nearly $20 million in prize winnings between both the 2018 and 2017 PGA Tours.
