What is a VPN?

A virtual private network (VPN) is a piece of software that runs in the background on your device and replaces your normal IP address with an overseas one.

With one click you can change your IP address to any country in the world. This makes it possible to unlock local content you usually couldn't access, fast and safe.

Additionally a VPN allows you to remain secure online, by protecting your real identity from prying eyes such as your ISP and local authorities.

VPN's don't track your usage either, allowing you to do whatever you like online.

There's many VPN providers out there, but we only recommend the best and most affordable for New Zealand residents and tourists.

What is NHL?

The NHL stands for National Hockey League and it’s the biggest professional ice hockey league in the world, located in North America.

It’s one of the biggest sports organisations in the USA and Canada. It was started in Canada in 1917. Back then the league only consisted of 4 teams, which were all from Canada, but today it has 31 different teams operating with 24 being from the United States and the other 7 from Canada.

The winner of the NHL is awarded the Stanley Cup, which is the oldest professional sports trophy in North America. The road to getting your hands on the Stanley Cup is long and challenging however.

The entire season consists of a pre-season, the regular season and postseason, which is the Stanley Cup playoffs. Every team in the NHL plays 82 games during the regular season, separated into 41 home and 41 away games.

How NHL Works?

In the regular season, if the game finishes as a draw, it goes on to extra time and the first team to score will be the winner.

If extra time still ends with level scores, it goes to a penalty shoot-out, where both teams have 3 shots and if that as well finishes level after 3 shooters, it goes to sudden death until someone wins.

The winning team gets 2 points and the team that loses in overtime or during the penalty shoot-out gains 1 point. Losses in normal time do not award any points. At the end of the regular season, the league's overall leader is awarded the President’s trophy.

The league is divided into the Eastern and Western conferences and at the end of the regular season conference leaders are also crowned the conference champions.

NHL League Explained

From each conference the 8 first teams progress to the knock-out stages to compete for the Stanley Cup. In each stage of the knock-out there is a best-of-seven games format meaning you the first team to reach 4 wins out of the 7 possible games, progresses.

The Stanley Cup has been won the most by the Montreal Canadians. They’ve won it a record 24 times. Toronto Maple Leafs have won it 13 times, but for both of these teams, their last Stanley Cup revelations took place in the 20th century.

Detroit Red Wings has been crowned champions 11 times, with their last triumph coming in 2009. Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins have 6 championships, Edmonton Oilers and Pittsburgh Penguins have 5.

Both New York teams Rangers and Islanders have won 4 championships each. The reigning champions currently are St Louis Blues, who won their first ever championship by defeating the Boston Bruins in the 2019 Stanley Cup final.
