What is NFL?

The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league composed of 32 teams split between the National Football Conference (NFC) and American Football Conference (AFC).

It is the highest level of American football in the world, and one of the four major professional sports leagues in America.

The seasons run for 17 weeks, from early September to Late December, each team playing 16 games with one bye. The structure of the NFL involves a 4 week preseason, the 17 weeks of the normal season, and then the playoffs which finally culminate in the Super Bowl.

The NFL was founded in August 20, 1920 and has since run for 98 years, becoming one of the most famous and wealthiest domestic sports leagues in the entire word.

How the NFL works?

Two conferences of 16 teams compete in the NFL, which are themselves split into four divisions of four a piece, organized geographically.

Games are usually played on Sunday, Monday and Thursday nights, as federal law dictates that the professional football leagues cannot interfere with high school or college football games, which are played on Friday and Saturday nights.

The NFL normal season leads up to the playoff season, the competitors of which are the top six from each division at the end of the normal season. In the case of ties between teams, a series of tie breakers are enforced to determine who qualifies for the playoffs.

Twelve teams compete in a single elimination format, where the top 6 from each conference verse each other to determine the Conference Champions. The two Conference Champions from the NFC and the AFC then go on to play each other in the Super Bowl.

NFL & The Superbowl

The Super Bowl is one of the biggest sporting events in the world, drawing in tens of millions of viewers, primarily from the United States. The 2015 Super Bowl was estimated to have had a 168 million viewers tuning in for portions of the broadcast.

Given the high viewership, commercials during the Super Bowl are the most expensive, leading to companies putting in massive investments into their commercials, leading to the commercials themselves becoming part of the Super Bowl’s appeal.

Moreover, there are pregame, and halftime shows which feature performances from celebrities, in the past musicians such as Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey and Madonna, to name only a few.

The 2019 Super Bowl, stylized as the Super Bowl LIII, took place in February of 2019, between NFC champions, Los Angeles Rams and the AFC Champions, the New England Patriots.

It was a comfortable victory for the Patriots, who won 13-3.

The national anthem was performed by Gladys Knight and featured halftime performances from Maroon 5, who headlined, and featured rappers Travis Scott and Big Boi of OutKast fame.

This was the Patriots’ 6th Super Bowl victory, who tie with the Pittsburgh Steelers for most Super Bowl championships. It was the lowest scoring game in Super Bowl history, and also the only to feature no touchdowns until the final quarter, the score being tied 3-3 until the fourth.
