The Indian Premier League is an Indian Twenty20 cricket tournament occurring every year, either in March or throughout both April and May.
Twenty20 cricket, often abbreviated to T20, is a shortened form of professional cricket, with games lasting approximately 3 hours. T20 cricket was designed to be much shorter than other forms of cricket, closer to the length of games of other sports, to be more attractive to less die-hard supporters.
Dream 11 IPL is starting September 19th.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a relatively new league, its inception occurring in 2008, established by the Board of Control for Cricket (BCC). Either 8 or 10 teams participate in it each year, the most successful of which thus far have been the Mumbai Indians, winning 4 titles of its 12 seasons, including its most recent in 2019.
In the current iteration, there are 8 competing teams, 7 of which have competed since the first league in 2008. In 2013, Sunrisers Hyderabad made their league debut, and have been a consistent competitor ever since. There have been 5 other teams who have participated in the league, which have since been dissolved.
Despite its geographical exclusivity the IPL is one of the most viewed sporting events in the world, ranking at sixth. It is the most attended cricket event in the world, primarily due to India’s massive population, but the high quality of play has led to hundreds of millions of viewers throughout the world each year.
The 2015 IPL Season was estimated to have injected over 11.5 billion Rupees into the Indian Economy, equivalent to nearly 250 million AUD.
The format of the tournament, in its current implementation of 8 teams, is relatively simple. Each team faces the other in a home and away, round robin format, with the top four teams qualifying for the playoffs.
The top four then compete in a series of matches until only one remains, which are then crowned champions of the league.
The IPL distributes roughly $7.2 million amongst the top four winning teams, equating to about ₹50 crore. The winning team receives ₹20 crore, the runners up receiving ₹12.5 crore, and the third and fourth teams each receiving ₹8.75 crore.
As mentioned previously, the Mumbai Indians are the most successful team in the league’s history, boasting 4 wins.
The Chennai Super Kings come in at a close second, with three league wins, and the Kolkata Knight Riders not far behind with two victories of their own. Various other teams have each won the remaining four leagues one time each.
The value of the league is noteworthy, having been described as a ‘very powerful property’, and has continued to grow at a fast pace, particularly between 2016-2018, where it grew from an estimated $4 billion USD to $6 billion USD.
This is a trend that looks to continue grow, given the continued number of viewers for the league each year, continuing to attract sponsors and increased costs of broadcasting rights increasing the value of the league.
