Discover the uniqueness that is Waiheke. Unspoiled sandy beaches, lush native bush, fabulous views, and the islands best walkways. The Waiheke walkways are free to use and maintained by Auckland City Council.

Think Waiheke Island and the words sunshine, beaches, vineyards and ferries all spring immediately to mind. But Waiheke is much more than this. It is an island begging to be explored, and Auckland City's vast network of walkways makes this a pleasure. Whether it is the quiet solitude and Unique fragrance of the native bush or the stunning views from cliff-tops and headlands which appeals, Waiheke's walkways offer a diversity and tranquility rarely found so close to the city.

The eight main walkways on Waiheke Island   There are many areas of historic interest and large tracts of reserve land. The numerous native wood pigeons are fascinating to observe and beautiful in flight. The Waiheke Walkways Brochure details eight of the islands major walkways, and their side trips, which can either shorten or lengthen the walk, according to preference. While Waiheke is generally sunnier and warmer than Auckland it is advisable to carry warm clothing, use sunscreen, wear sensible walking shoes, and take plenty of liquids. Many of the islands roads are narrow and winding so care should be taken when walking on these.
Each of the routes in the brochure has a handy map and description of the walk. The routes covered are:

1. Matiatia / Fossil Bay Loop: With magnificent cliff top and coastal views, duration at least 3 hours.

2. Church Bay Circuit: With stunning southern coastal aspects, duration allow 3 hours.

3. Onetangi Meanderings: Along Waiheke's biggest ocean beach, duration allow 2 hours.

4. Waikopou Bay (Mac's Walk): Walkway, duration allow 2 hours.

5. Orapiu / Hunterville / Otakawhe: Pearl Bays secluded coastal walkway, duration allow 1.5 hours.

6. Hekerua Bay to Palm Beach: Waiheke's northern beaches, duration allow 2 hours.

7. Oneroa / Blackpool: Cafe stretch rocky and sandy beaches, bush reserves, duration allow 1.5 hours.

8. Rocky Bay Ramble: Southern coastline through mature coastal forest duration allow 2.5 hours.
