During World War two the New Zealand army built three huge concrete gun emplacements and dug mole-like mazes of tunnels at the eastern end on the hill "Stony Batter". Open to the public they offer both an insight to the extent of defence preparations and wonderful views of the southern end of the Hauraki Gulf. You need a flashlight to view its very dark empty rooms and deep tunnels. For more information about The Stony Batter Protection & Restoration Society please visit www.stonybatter.org. From the public reserve there are magnificent views up the east coast of Auckland past Kawau Island and across to Great Barrier Island.
