Located 30km north east of central Auckland and just 4km from the end of Whangaparaoa Peninsula, Tiritiri Matangi Island is one of New Zealand's most important and exciting conservation projects and nowhere else in New Zealand can you readily walk amongst so many species in such significant quantities. Tiritiri Matangi is one of only 2 Open Scientific Reserves in New Zealand.

The lighthouse complex is one of only a few surviving lighthouse settlements in New Zealand, and the only one easily accessible to the public. Built in 1864, the lighthouse is also one of New Zealand's oldest. It is made of cast iron pre-fabricated in Britain and brought out by ship in sections which were bolted together on site. Over 21m tall and 4.7m in diameter at the base, it was initially painted bright red.

An information centre and shop is located near the lighthouse, selling cold drinks, T-shirts, sweatshirts, leadlight bird hangings, books, posters, bird pins, cards, native bird finger puppets and hand puppets, tea-towels, brooches, tiles, fridge magnets, socks, cassettes and CD's, and many more interesting Tiritiri Matangi souvenirs. Cash and Credit Cards welcome, but sorry no EFTPOS. Funding for conservation all around the world is minimal and New Zealand is no exception. All proceeds from the shop go directly back into this magnificent island project.

Overnight accommodation is available, at a very reasonable cost, on Tiritiri Matangi in a bunkhouse that sleeps a total of 19 in four rooms. The bunkhouse is well equipped with all cooking utensils, freezer, refrigerator, microwave, gas stove and BBQ. Hot and cold running water, showers and bathroom facilities.

For ornithologically minded people, no visit to Auckland would be complete without a trip to Tiritiri Matangi.
