Headland - Sculpture on the Gulf is a biennial outdoor sculpture exhibition on Waiheke Island. It is New Zealand’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition situated along two kilometres of stunning Waiheke Island coastline, the artworks which make up ‘Sculpture on the Gulf’ offer a great way to enjoy the island. The exhibition is free to the public and can be walked at your leisure. Come to Waiheke Island and enter a world where you are enchanted, entertained and amazed, and from which you return refreshed and invigorated. This is an exhibition with a difference. It allows visitors to enjoy some of New Zealand’s most unique and stunning coastline, while showcasing work by New Zealand’s leading and thought provoking artists. The exhibition has selected works being placed along a 2 kilometer coastal walkway. This walk offers a huge variety of discrete settings, from enclosed beaches, to grass-clad hillsides, ancient pohutukawa, rugged cliffs, serried ranks of vineyards and bush-clad gullies, and always it is beside and above the speckle-back ocean, an endlessly moving, living entity patterned in light and colour. The aim is not just to leave gallery walls behind, but also to place the works and viewers under the sky and beside the sea, with the very deliberate intention to key into and become part of the stunning coastal scenery of the island.
