The Great Lake Relay is the ultimate team relay event is designed for runners and walkers from all walks of life, ages and fitness levels. Participants include corporate teams, group of friends, running and walking organisations and families. The atmosphere is brilliant with some of the event rolling through the night. All teams return back to Taupo Saturday afternoon. In the very centre of North Island, Lake Taupo is the largest lake in Australasia. Around it, the Ultimate Team Relay is run by more than 5,000 competitors each year, in a team building exercise par excellence. Each team consists of 10 to 18 members, either running or walking to complete the 18 legs of 5.2km (3.25 miles) to 14.4km (9 miles) around the lake. With certain categories taking place through the night, this is one of the most scenic and sociable events of its kind in New Zealand. Big cash prizes are awarded to winners.
